About this test
Breast and ovarian cancer are among the most common cancers in women and are associated with changes in the same genes. Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (breast and ovarian cancer syndrome) is caused by mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes and is characterized by an increased risk of breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer in burden men.
While the population risk of developing breast cancer is around 13%, which means that 1 in 8 women will develop this cancer, carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations increase the risk of developing breast cancer to 40-87%. In the case of ovarian cancer, the risk of developing the mutation in carriers is up to 40%.
Despite the fact that the syndrome of breast and ovarian cancer is responsible for 5-10% of cancers, it is the most common cause of cancer among young women. Early detection of mutations enables appropriate selection of diagnostic tests and proper genetic care and counseling for families in burdened families.
