About this test
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies, and its hereditary forms can be divided into two main types: those associated with, and those not associated with, polyposis – that is, the presence in the intestinal wall of small growths that can over time transform into adenocarcinomas.
Hereditary colorectal cancer is most often associated with Lynch syndrome, in which there are defects in genes involved in the repair of DNA damage (MLH1, MSH2, PMS2, MSH6).
Patients with Lynch syndrome have a 78% risk of developing colorectal cancer; women additionally have a 40–60% risk of developing endometrial cancer.
In this test we use MLPA technology to examine the MLH1 and MSH2 genes for large deletions/duplications.
